Ace: So I might ask, Attendant Ready, about your rank color. That’s a Petty Officer grade, isn’t it?
Ready: Yes. A Crew Leader Basic.
Ace: The lowest rank you can hold and still give direction to Crewmembers. But, as an AI, you have immediate access to nearly all medical knowledge, including Terran, to a point. What you might lack in experience, you make up for in detail and precision. You could give any Primary Medic, or Surgeon, a run for her money. So why aren’t you at least an Ensign?
Walton: Some Orions have not accepted that The Awakened are truly self-aware and capable of self-determination. And some do, but still don’t like taking orders from a machine. Ordinarily, that’s their problem. An officer is an officer, and an order is an order. But The Awakened also have qualms about giving orders. It was hard enough getting Lt Rusty to accept a commission. Even so, Crew Leaders eventually become Team Leaders, or even Section Leaders. Our equivalents of Chief Petty Officers and Warrant Officers.
Ready: Giving orders is not the problem, Commander. I can literally call on the voice of any Primary Medic or Surgeon on duty in the event that there is a problem with getting a patient to accept a medical directive. Should I advance further in rank, I will be expected to start doing paperwork.
Walton: But, can’t you file any form or report in micros?
Ready: Commander, not even an aware AI likes doing paperwork.
